Wine reviews
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon BFD Beckstoffer to Kalon Vineyard is a co-fermention of 55% Cabernet Franc from the westernmost rows closest to the Mayacamas Mountains, with 45% Cabernet Sauvignon coming from B, F and D blocks. The vines here are strictly managed to one cluster per shoot. A barrel sample, the wine is currently being matured in mostly Sylvain Grande Reserve and Darnajou small French oak barrels, where it will remain for a total of 20 months. The wine displays a deep garnet-purple color and charges out of the gate with gregarious notions of black cherries, freshly crushed blackberries and blackcurrants with nuances of violets, bay leaves, damp soil and pencil lead plus a waft of charcuterie. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has bags of bright, energetic black fruits with a firm, finely grained frame and bold freshness, finishing long and perfumed. – LPB
Based on 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Beckstoffer To Kalon BFD is more ethereal and complex, with a stunning bouquet of cassis, spring flowers, violets, damp underbrush, dark chocolate, and graphite. With incredible purity, full-bodied richness, ultra-fine tannins, and thrilling length, it's another magical Cabernet Franc-dominated blend from this site that's up with the crème de la crème of the vintage. – JD
