Wine reviews
A solid, fruit-driven style, with plum, cassis and boysenberry notes, backed by lightly brambly grip and an enticing licorice streak. The finish shows some toasty oomph, but the fruit wins out easily. Very well-poised and should cellar nicely. Best from 2020 through 2032. 402 cases made. – JM
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard opens with provocative notions of crushed rocks, fertile loam and truffles with a core of warm cassis, blackberry pie and wild blueberries with touches of camphor and cloves. Medium to full-bodied and built like a brick house, it packs in the muscular fruit layers with compelling red fruit sparks, framed by firm, grainy tannins and finishing very long and very earthy. 402 cases produced. – LPB
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard is a total stunner. Soaring aromatics set the stage for blockbuster Cabernet endowed with striking purity and definition. All of the signatures of this St. Helena site come through in this beautifully layered, exquisite Cabernet from Paul Hobbs. I can't wait to taste the Piedras from bottle. Wow! – Antonio Galloni
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard (a barrel sample) is a very deep purple-black color and is scented of crushed blackberries and black currants with suggestions of cherries, dark chocolate, menthol and sautéed herbs, plus a waft of yeast extract and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied, the wine has a mouth full of earth and savory-inspired notions supported by firm, grainy tannins, finishing with an herbal lift. It is anticipated that 400 cases will be made. – LPB
