Wine reviews
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The O.G. is another killer for Carter in this vintage. It might be just below the profound concentration and depth of the 2013, but this is certainly going to be an upper90-point wine when released. Amazing cassis, blackberry and floral notes followed by a full-bodied, velvety textured, super-rich and concentrated wine that is a stunner. This is first-growth quality that is unreal. It should drink well for 20 years, even in a more precocious vintage like 2014. Carter Cellars has been on a qualitative tear in tastings I’ve done over the last 4-5 years, so it was with great anticipation and high expectations I sat down to taste the 2013s and barrel samples of the 2014s given what Mark Carter had achieved not only in 2012, but even in more challenging vintages such as 2011. Fasten your seatbelts!-RP
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon The O.G. is clearly a 25- to 30-year wine. This is profound wine, opulent with loads of spice, pen ink, blackberry and cassis, forward aromatics with floral notes and forest floor. The wine has stunning concentration and a mouth-filling, savory, unctuosity. This is great stuff and delicious already. About 223 cases were made and it finished at 14.9% natural alcohol – about the same as the other wines.- RP Mark Carter, who is also making pretty sensational boutique bourbon from Kentucky, continues to showcase great Beckstoffer vineyards with his full-throttle winemaking.
