Wine reviews
A big, rich and concentrated Cabernet, with a gutsy yet soothing core of tannic currant, blackberry, black licorice, fresh earth, cedar and graphite flavors. Very young and tightly wound, this is not quite ready to drink and should only get better with time. Best from 2014 through 2024. 509 cases made. –JL
This is a pinnacle of the modern style of winemaking in Napa Valley. The tannins are strong but not aggressive. The acidity is just enough to provide balance for the tremendously rich blackberry, black currant, Kahlua and olive flavors. The oak is powerful, but the wine wears it easily. The finish is thoroughly dry, long and spicy. And although the alcohol is high, it’s not impossible. You can drink it now, although the tannins could benefit from 6–8 years in the cellar.- SH
The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard saturates every corner of the palate with layers after layers of rich dark fruit, mocha, spices and licorice. This is a stunning To Kalon endowed with tons of site-specific character and nuance. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. This is a huge success as is the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard. There is a level of viscosity and richness in both of these cuvees that one does not normally find in this charming, endearing vintage
