2021 Carter Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Los Compadres
Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard

While the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Los Compadres is consistent in style with the 2019, being somewhat taut, mouthwatering and structured, this barrel selection from the various Las Piedras lots seems to lack the richness and expansiveness on the palate exhibited by the other bottlings. Perhaps that's the point—sacrificing upfront pleasure for the purpose of long-term aging. Black cherries and baking spices are delivered in a full-bodied format that manages to be a bit wiry in feel, with a long, sinewy finish. – JC

Coming from vines planted in 2001 and based on Clone 337, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Los Compadres is absolutely stunning and has incredible purity in its crème de cassis, spring flowers, chocolate, crushed stone, and graphite-driven aromas and flavors. Certainly a more showy, extroverted wine compared to the La Verdad, it nevertheless isn't anywhere close to being over the top and has full-bodied richness, a perfectly balanced, layered mouthfeel, wonderful tannins, and a great, great finish. This is pure Napa Valley magic and will benefit from just a few years of bottle age and cruise for 20-25 years in cold cellars. – JD
