Rich and polished in feel, offering cassis, plum puree and steeped blackberry fruit inlaid with loam, menthol and tobacco notes. The long finish takes on a frankly toasty edge, but the fruit lingers steadily as well. A large-scale version, with just enough restraint. Best from 2026 through 2040. 200 cases made. – JM
Coming from a newly planted parcel in the back of the property, the 2021 Vida Valiente Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 24 months in new barrels. Classic To Kalon red, blue, and black fruits as well as spring flowers, incense, and tobacco notes all emerge from this beauty, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a round, layered elegant profile, fine tannins, and outstanding length. It's not massive by To Kalon standards but has gorgeous balance and elegance. - J.D.
