Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard
Wine Spectator 92 Points
July 2010

Intense, ripe, rich and generous, with tiers of black cherry, wild berry, plum and currant. Full-bodied, expansive and layered, ending with a long, elegant, persistent finish. Drink now through 2018. 140 cases made. - JL

Although backward, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Blind Justice Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is impressively built, offering plenty of blue and blackberry fruit notes intermixed with notions of cold steel and crushed rocks. Fullbodied, powerful, dense, and long, this wine needs to be forgotten for 2-3 years, and drunk over the following two decades. These impressive wines are made in relatively small quantities ranging from 160 to 300+ cases. Winemaker Marco DiGiulio, who did terrific work for some of the Jess Jackson projects, is making the wine at Bounty Hunter Rare Wines. All the fruit comes from either the Beckstoffer To Kalon or Beckstoffer Dr. Crane vineyards, and I find the Justice-themed names very clever, and the packaging top-flight. The 2007s are slightly more powerful, backward wines (alcohol levels range from the upper 14% to low 15%), but they have enough structure as well as sensational concentration and depth to support the tannins.

Made from a slightly different blend (61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot), the 2007 Poetic Justice Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is a classic Oakville offering revealing copious amounts of cedar, graphite, cassis, black cherries, spice box, and new wood. Very Pauillac-like (which seems to be a characteristic of this vineyard), full-bodied, and opaque purple-colored, it possesses huge tannins as well as massive fruit. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 25+. These impressive wines are made in relatively small quantities ranging from 160 to 300+ cases. Fresh and vibrant, with rich, full-bodied, zesty currant, mineral, black licorice, cedar and spice. Well-focused, with lively acidity and firm tannins, showing depth and structure. This has a long, engaging finish and a dash of oak. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2010 through 2016. 218 cases made. – JL
